Frequently Asked Questions

Can I change the types of security cameras that come in your kits or change the number of cameras?

Yes, all of our kits can be modified as you choose. You may be required to pay any difference in price. In order to modify a kit, you will need to call our toll free number 0800 723 373 or email us on  info@securitycameras.co.nz

What is the maximum cable length for a camera run?

See our Installation Tips in our Help & Advice Section

How much video and or recording time can I get with your system?

There are several variables that control the amount of video recording which can be stored on your system. The number of frames per second you are recording, how many security cameras and what resolution you are recording all impact on the amount of video which can be stored. You can increase the amount of video history the system can store by performing any of the following. They are listed in the order we would recommend.

  • Add More Hard Drive Space
  • Use Motion Activated Recording Only
  • Reduce the Number of Frames Per Second Each Camera is Recording
  • Reduce the Recording Resolution

Can outdoor cameras be used indoors or vice versa?

Outdoor cameras can be used indoors but indoor cameras cannot be used outdoors.

Can I connect my current Analogue cameras with your DVR’s?

Yes usually you can. The type of DVR you purchase has to match  the type of Cameras you have.

Provided that your system is CCTV ready or capable and uses BNC style connections or Baluns it should work. Our DVRs work with most other CCTV equipment but we do not guarantee that it will work with every system.

Does your system support audio and how does it work?

Yes, our system supports audio. It supports one audio channel for every video channel. A microphone kit is required for each audio channel desired. If considering Audio you should contact the Police or a Lawyer as to its legality

Do I need to have power at every single camera?

Every security camera must have power but you don't need to run or have an AC power outlet next to each camera. All security cameras can be powered with plug in power supplies on a power supply next to your recorder

Do you offer installation with your products?

Yes we do.

While our systems are designed as “DIY” installations many people are more comfortable having a professional install the system.   We offer a full installation service Nationwide.

Can I watch my system from my Cellphone or at a remote location and how does it work?

Yes you can.

We call it “Remote Access”.   It just requires an Internet Connection and programming - see our section “How to set up Remote Viewing” in our Help & Advice Page

Can I replace my faulty old cameras with your cameras and connect them to my existing DVR?

If you are replacing Cameras and connecting them to an existing DVR you have to be careful that the format of the new Cameras matches your DVR.   To avoid issues use 4 in 1 Cameras.   You can then select the format on the Camera to what you require: CVI, AHD, CVBS (Old Analogue), TVI

If you are replacing Cameras and connecting them to an existing Dahua DVR you probably will need to use the CVI Format

Some older DVRs used an SDI Format.   If this is the case you will need SDI Cameras.

I am replacing some cameras - will their current power supply work?

BE CAREFUL.   Most Cameras work on a 12VDC Power Supply, however some Cameras operate on higher DC Voltages and some work on AC Voltages.

Before ordering replacement Cameras CHECK the voltage of the existing Cameras you have.   If they are not 12V DC then you will have to replace the Power Supply OR install a Converter at the Camera (A 24VAC to 12V DC is the most common converter that is required).

Using incorrect power supplies will damage Cameras and negate warranties.
